Transportation

Pleasant Hill is the hub of the Gay Lea Wilson Trail that runs to Des Moines and Altoona. In recent years, the city has enhanced the trail system, allowing residents to reach most city services without the need for a car. Additionally, it has adopted a Complete Streets policy, ensuring safe usage by pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists alike. Public transportation is provided by the Des Moines Area Regional Transit (DART) which operates a route between Pleasant Hill and Des Moines. The average one-way commute time for Pleasant Hill residents is 20.23 minutes, compared to the national average of 26.4.

Pleasant Hill is a busy and growing community infused with the spirit of the crossroads it occupies. Residents who love going outdoors can enjoy Sleepy Hollow Sports Park that features winter sports like sledding and summer activities like a Renaissance Faire, bumper boats, laser tag, and much more. Nearby Copper Creek Lake Park is an oasis of nature in the city and a popular destination for walkers and cyclists, and hosts Art on the Lake, an annual festival of arts; and features an 18-hole golf course. Pleasant Hill residents have the option of two school districts, Des Moines Public Schools and Southeast Polk Community School District.

History

The area around what is now Pleasant Hill saw its first European settlers with brothers John and William Shadle who settled there in 1851. Pleasant Hill was incorporated as a city in 1956, named for the picturesque landscape that surrounds it. In the late 1800s, a coal mining boom across southern Iowa included the Pleasant Hill area, and several mines were opened attracting large numbers of coal miners and their families from all over the world, fueling rapid economic growth. During World War I, a military training camp was set up just south of Pleasant Hill for African American soldiers.
